About Astound Broadband
Astound Broadband originally began as a cable internet provider in the San Francisco Bay area but changed its name to Wave Broadband in 2015. Parent company TPG Capital merged Wave Broadband with RCN and Grande Communications in 2018 after purchasing the latter two providers in 2017.
In 2020, the combined services switched owners and collectively became Astound. RCN, Grande Communications, Wave Broadband, and several other services remained separate, familiar brands until 2022. Now they’re unified under the Astound Broadband name.
Why choose Astound Broadband for internet service?
Astound Broadband is ideal if you can’t get fiber and want faster speeds than DSL. It’s one of the few internet providers that caters to gamers too, offering NETGEAR’s Nighthawk XR1000 router and custom in-home wired networking (for additional fees).
You can find Astound’s 300 Mbps Internet plan in nearly every service area if you’re on a budget. Its fastest plan reaches download speeds up to 940 Mbps, and if you’re lucky, up to 940 Mbps upload speeds in fiber areas.
Pros:
- Optional Eero whole-home Wi-Fi
- Simplified plan lineup per area
- Speeds up to 940 Mbps
- Options for gamers
Cons:
- Limited fiber availability
- Inconsistent prices
- Data caps on the west coast
- Price hikes after 12–14 mos.
How does Astound Broadband compare against competitors?
Astound Broadband’s main competitors are Spectrum and Xfinity. Spectrum keeps your options simple and consistent no matter where you live, while Astound has a different lineup in the DC Metro area than it has in Chicago, for example. Xfinity has a more streamlined lineup now than it has in recent years, but it’s still not as simple as Spectrum. All three offer cable internet, so you can’t really go wrong.
