About Mediacom
Mediacom Communications is a hybrid fiber-coaxial cable internet provider headquartered in New York. It mainly provides internet service in states just west of the Great Lakes: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and a few others. You’ll also find Mediacom near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and in parts of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.
Mediacom is currently upgrading its core network to bring faster speeds to smaller towns. However, the company plans to deploy the CableLabs 10G Platform over the next several years using the DOCSIS 3.1 and 4.0 cable modem standards. That means Mediacom could soon deliver symmetrical 10 Gbps speeds over existing cable TV lines. The first trials began in 2020—Xfinity followed Mediacom’s lead in 2022. 1 2
For now, customers can enjoy download speeds from 100 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps in nearly all Mediacom cable internet service areas. Mediacom increased its download speeds in March 2022 (except for the 1 GIG plan), including a boost for the Connect2Compete Plus plan.3
Why choose Mediacom for internet service?
Mediacom is your best option if you want speeds faster than DSL and don’t have fiber in your area. Plus, Mediacom offers one of the cheapest gigabit plans available—until the promotional pricing ends. You can get gigabit speeds in almost every location Mediacom provides cable internet.
Pros
- Low promotional prices
- Gigabit speeds in most areas
Cons
- Data caps
- Expensive installation
How does Mediacom compare against competitors?
You can generally find Mediacom as the cable internet alternative to DSL and fiber internet offered by AT&T, EarthLink, CenturyLink, and Frontier. But there are areas where Mediacom competes directly with cable internet providers Xfinity and WOW!
In our annual customer satisfaction survey, Mediacom ranks sixth of 12 providers in overall satisfaction, behind EarthLink, AT&T, Verizon, and Suddenlink. It ranks fourth in reliability, its highest rank across the board, but eleventh in price satisfaction. Mediacom’s prices go up after 12 months, turning it into one of the most expensive cable internet providers in the US.
FAQ about Mediacom
What is the 10G Platform?
The 10G Platform is a project spearheaded by CableLabs to bring symmetrical 10 Gbps speeds to cable internet subscribers. It uses a combination of technologies, including fiber optics and DOCSIS 3.1 and 4.0 standards, which already support 10 Gbps download speeds. This platform allows Mediacom to deliver 10 Gbps speeds without installing new fiber-to-the-home connections.
The name 10G is short for 10 Gbps and is unrelated to the 5G term used for mobile, which is short for fifth generation.
When will Mediacom offer 10 Gbps speeds?
Mediacom doesn’t provide a specific window, but Mediacom Area Operations Director Lee Beck stated in April 2022, that the company plans to deploy the platform “in the coming years.” 4
Do Mediacom plans have data caps?
