Suddenlink provides mainly cable internet across the US. You may not see all the plans listed above where you live because the local infrastructure may not support all speed tiers. For example, six of the eight plans are available in areas that support gigabit speeds, while three of them are available only in areas with speeds limited to 150 Mbps.

Suddenlink offers fiber internet, too, but its availability is limited. You can’t know if a plan offers cable or fiber until you call to order service—Suddenlink doesn’t have separate fiber and cable plans. And there aren’t price differences between fiber and cable.

Suddenlink enforces data caps in areas that have a maximum internet speed of 50 Mbps. Customers in those areas can get unlimited data for an additional monthly fee, or pay $15 per 50 GB of data used over their limit each month.

About Suddenlink

Suddenlink Communications is a subsidiary of Altice USA that provides internet, VoIP phone, and cable TV services. It was the seventh-largest cable operator in the US until its acquisition by Altice in 2015, after which Altice combined it and another acquired brand into one.2 Altice USA plans to rebrand Suddenlink as Optimum by the end of 2022.4

Suddenlink provides cable internet in 17 states, but it also has fiber internet in limited areas. Altice USA expects to have 2.5 million Suddenlink fiber connections by 2025.1

Why choose Suddenlink for internet service?

Suddenlink is ideal if there are no other cable or fiber internet providers in your area and you want speeds faster than DSL. Suddenlink is also a good option if you want to choose from a wide variety of plans. Download speeds range from up to 50 Mbps to 940 Mbps, depending on where you live.

 Pros:

  • No contracts
  • Fast internet in rural areas
  • Wide plan variety

 Cons:

  • Data caps on some plans
  • Price hikes after a year
  • Long list of fees

How does Suddenlink compare against competitors?

Suddenlink competes with Xfinity, Spectrum, and Frontier. Its Internet 200 plan is more expensive than similar plans offered by Spectrum and Xfinity, and it’s more expensive than Frontier’s Fiber Internet 500 plan. But the interesting thing is that Suddenlink’s Internet 1 Gig plan is one of the cheapest we’ve seen, costing $10 less than Spectrum’s Gig plan for the first 12 months.

FAQ about Suddenlink

Who bought Suddenlink?

Netherlands-based Altice acquired most of Suddenlink’s shares from various investors in 2015. Altice merged the St. Louis-based Suddenlink cable company with another acquisition, New Jersey’s Cablevision (now Optimum), in 2016. Both are subsidiaries of the holding company Altice USA, which is headquartered in New York City. They deliver internet through a hybrid fiber-coaxial broadband network and fiber-to-the-home connections.

Does Suddenlink have data caps?

Suddenlink enforces data caps in areas where its maximum internet speed is 50 Mbps. You can pay $10 more each month for unlimited data, otherwise, there’s a $15 overage charge for each additional 50 GB you use beyond your monthly allowance.

What is Altice One?

Altice One is an all-in-one device that combines a modem and router with a TV receiver. It costs $20 per month and includes a voice-activated remote and an integrated DVR. Each Mini extender—a device that boosts your Wi-Fi and hooks up additional TVs—is an extra $10 per month.

What is Suddenlink Stream?

Suddenlink Stream is a media streaming device that connects to your TV. It costs $5 per month (free if you have the Internet 1 Gig plan) and supports Google Play apps and games. You can install the Suddenlink Stream app, too, which includes more than 50 free streaming channels.3

What is Suddenlink Xtend?

Suddenlink Xtend increases the whole-home coverage of SuddenLink’s Smart Wi-Fi 6 gateway. One Xtend unit is included with the gateway, but you can get additional Xtend units for $3 per month each for better Wi-Fi coverage in your home.

What is Suddenlink Amplify?

Suddenlink Amplify is a smart speaker designed by Devialet Technologies. It supports Amazon Alexa, so you can use voice commands to control the Altice One and play your favorite songs. The speaker’s adaptive volume level technology scans the environment and adjusts the volume accordingly, so it’s not head-pounding loud. Suddenlink Amplify costs $15 per month.
